The Problem With “Find Your Passion”: Purpose Is Bigger Than What You Enjoy

I love passion.

Passion is fun.

Passion gives us energy.

Passion makes us spend an irresponsible amount of time researching something nobody asked us to research. 😂

But I do not think “find your passion” is particularly helpful purpose advice.

For one thing, some of us have seventeen passions.

And perhaps most importantly:

Purpose is bigger than what you enjoy.

Passion Asks, “What Lights Me Up?”

That is a useful question.

What gives you energy?

What do you love learning about?

What do you lose track of time doing?

What would you keep doing even if nobody applauded?

All good evidence.

In the IGNIS Framework®, some of that lives in Fuel—the gifts, strengths, talents, quirks, and ways of operating that naturally energize you.

But Fuel is only part of the fire.

A meaningful life cannot be built only around what feels exciting.

Purpose Eventually Has to Meet Someone Else

Who benefits from how you are wired?

What becomes possible because you were there?

What do your gifts help create, change, heal, build, clarify, protect, or restore?

That is where purpose gets deeper than passion.

I may be passionate about dancing.

Wonderful.

Maybe dancing is simply joy.

Maybe it is art.

Maybe it becomes a way I create freedom, confidence, community, or expression for others.

The activity does not automatically tell me the purpose.

The contribution gives me more information.

Some Purposeful Things Are Not Fun

I need us to make room for this too.

Purpose can involve responsibility.

Sacrifice.

Hard conversations.

Building something slowly.

Serving people when you are tired.

Learning skills you do not naturally enjoy.

Doing administrative work because the meaningful thing still needs a spreadsheet. 😂

If we use excitement as the only alignment test, we may abandon assignments that matter the moment they become difficult.

Purpose can create joy.

Passion Can Become Performance

This happens when we feel pressure to identify “our thing.”

We find something we are good at.

People praise us.

We build an identity around it.

Then one day we realize we do not even know whether we still want it.

We simply became known for it.

That is why I care about identity and values alongside purpose.

What matters to you?

Who are you beyond applause?

What contribution feels true even when the expression changes?

What are you doing because it is aligned—and what are you doing because you are good at being rewarded for it?

Those questions can be uncomfortable.

They are also clarifying.

Look for More Than Excitement

When you are trying to understand purpose, look at:

Energy

What lights you up?

Wiring

What comes naturally or has become deeply developed?

What shaped what you care about?

People

Who are you drawn to serve, support, equip, create for, advocate for, or impact?

Contribution

What changes because of your presence?

Values

What matters about how you do it?

That combination gives us a much richer picture than passion alone.

You Can Love Something Without Making It Your Purpose

Please hear me on this.

A hobby does not need a business model.

An interest does not need a mission statement.

A talent does not obligate you to build a career around it.

Some things can simply make life delicious.

I think purpose work gets healthier when we stop demanding that everything we love become productive.

Joy can be joy.

Play can be play.

Rest can be rest.

Do Not Chase Passion. Read the Pattern.

If you are asking what you are here for, do not only ask:

“What do I love?”

Ask:

What keeps showing up?

What am I wired to contribute?

What did my story teach me to notice?

Who am I drawn toward?

What kind of difference feels meaningful?

What remains true across seasons?

Passion is a clue.

It is not the whole map.

Purpose is not just about what excites you.

It is about what your life is equipped, shaped, and willing to contribute.

That is a fire worth understanding.
