Purpose Leaves Evidence: 7 Places to Look Before Asking “What Am I Here For?”
“What is my purpose?”
Big question.
Very casual thing for our brains to bring up at 1:17 a.m. on a Tuesday. 😂
A lot of us approach purpose like there is a single answer hidden somewhere outside of us.
If we read the right book.
Take the right assessment.
Find the right mentor.
Pray the right prayer.
Land the right job.
Maybe the answer will finally drop from the ceiling with dramatic lighting.
I do not think purpose usually works like that.
Not perfect evidence.
Not always obvious evidence.
But enough breadcrumbs that, when we slow down and look at our whole lives, patterns start becoming visible.
That belief is at the center of the IGNIS Framework®.
You are not empty.
You are not starting with nothing.
You probably already have a surprising amount of raw material.
Here are seven places I would look.
1. What You Keep Caring About
What bothers you enough that you keep talking about it?
What makes you say, “Somebody should do something about this”?
What kind of problem catches your attention even when it is technically not your responsibility?
Purpose often leaves clues in persistent care.
Maybe you notice people who are left out.
Broken systems.
Confusing information.
Kids without opportunities.
Leaders who need courage.
Artists who need a platform.
People rebuilding after loss.
You do not have to solve every problem you notice.
But pay attention to the ones that keep finding you.
2. What People Naturally Come to You For
I am not asking what your job description says.
I am asking what people ask you for when they could ask anybody.
Perspective?
A plan?
A pep talk?
Design help?
Truth?
Prayer?
A recommendation?
A calm presence when everything is falling apart?
Sometimes the people around us see our Fuel before we have language for it ourselves.
3. What Energizes You Even When It Is Work
Purpose does not mean everything is easy.
I need us to release that immediately. 😂
Meaningful work can still be exhausting.
But there are certain kinds of effort that leave us feeling more like ourselves.
You may be tired after facilitating all day and still think, That mattered.
You may spend hours writing and lose track of time.
You may organize chaos and somehow feel energized by the puzzle.
That energy is information.
In IGNIS, I call this part of the evidence Fuel—the gifts, strengths, talents, wiring, and natural
ways of operating that give your fire something to burn with.
4. What Your Story Taught You to See
I believe nothing has to be wasted.
That does not mean everything that happened was good, deserved, necessary, or secretly wonderful.
Some things were simply hard.
But our experiences can shape what we notice.
A rejection may make you sensitive to belonging.
A confusing career path may make you gifted at helping others navigate transitions.
Being underestimated may make you notice people others overlook.
A joyful experience may make you want more people to access that same kind of joy.
Your story is not your purpose.
But it can shape the way your purpose moves through the world.
5. What Was True Before You Knew What Was Marketable
This question is fun.
Who were you before somebody told you what counted as productive?
What did you do as a kid?
Organize everybody?
Perform?
Build things?
Ask eleven thousand questions?
Teach your dolls?
Defend the kid nobody else defended?
Create elaborate systems for games nobody asked you to optimize?
Childhood does not give us a perfect purpose diagnosis.
But it can show us traits that existed before titles, résumés, prestige, and money started editing the story.
6. What Stayed Consistent Across Very Different Seasons
This is one of my favorite places to look.
My own career moved through professional theatre, events, corporate leadership, coaching, facilitation, writing, and speaking.
On paper, that can look like several lives sharing one LinkedIn profile.
But when I stopped looking at titles and started looking at contribution, the pattern became much clearer.
I kept creating clarity.
Holding complexity.
Helping people get where they were trying to go.
Seeing what was needed behind the scenes.
Bringing energy and structure to moving parts.
The assignments changed.
The deeper contribution traveled.
Ask:
What keeps showing up even when the environment changes?
7. Who Your Fire Naturally Moves Toward
Purpose eventually turns outward.
Who do you want to help?
Not because they are a profitable target market.
Because something in you recognizes something in them.
Who makes you think:
“I want them to know what is possible.”
“I want them to feel seen.”
“I want to make this easier.”
“I want to create something for people like them.”
In IGNIS, I call this Flame—the people your fire is drawn to light up.
Purpose is not only about what you enjoy doing.
It is about what your life contributes beyond you.
Stop Asking Purpose to Appear Without Evidence
You can absolutely pray. (Please do if you're a Christian! God has created your purpose!)
Reflect.
Take assessments.
Talk with wise people.
Experiment.
All of that can help.
But do not ignore the life you have already lived while searching for a mysterious answer somewhere else.
Look at the evidence.
What you believe.
How you are wired.
What shaped you.
Who you keep caring about.
What stays consistent.
What changes when you show up.
You may not have the perfect sentence yet.
That is okay.
Purpose is not made more real by how elegantly you can explain it.
But when you learn to see the pattern, you start having better language for the life you are already living.
Purpose leaves evidence.
