Purpose vs. Assignment: Why a Closed Door Does Not Mean You Missed Your Calling
Some doors close loudly.
Layoffs.
Breakups.
Rejections.
Contracts ending.
Programs getting canceled.
A role you wanted going to someone else.
Other doors close quietly.
You simply stop feeling alive in work that used to fit.
A season changes.
A responsibility ends.
An opportunity you prayed for becomes something you know you need to release.
And when we have attached purpose to the door, its closing can create a spiritual and identity crisis at the same time.
Was I wrong?
I missed my calling?
Did I miss God?
Was that never my purpose?
What am I supposed to do now?
Purpose Is the Contribution. Assignment Is the Current Expression.
In the IGNIS Framework®, purpose is the enduring contribution you were created to make.
An assignment is one place, role, relationship, project, season, or opportunity where that purpose may be expressed.
That means:
Your job can be an assignment.
A business can be an assignment.
A volunteer role can be an assignment.
A caregiving season can be an assignment.
A book can be an assignment.
A church role can be an assignment.
A creative project can be an assignment.
Assignments matter.
They can be deeply meaningful.
They can also end.
We Get Into Trouble When the Assignment Becomes the Identity
When one of my corporate assignments ended, I was not only grieving the role.
I had wrapped enough identity around it that the loss started asking much bigger questions.
If I am not doing that anymore, who am I?
What am I here for now?
The breakthrough was not instantly discovering the next perfect job.
It was recognizing that I had confused where I was living my purpose with the purpose itself.
Those are not the same thing.
A Closed Door Can Mean Several Things
I resist the urge to turn every closed door into a neat spiritual lesson.
Sometimes a company restructures.
Sometimes the market changes.
Sometimes people make decisions we disagree with.
Sometimes we make mistakes.
Sometimes a season simply ends.
For people of faith, I do believe God can direct through closed doors.
I also believe we should be careful about claiming we know exactly why every door closed.
The more useful question is often:
What remains mine to steward now?
My gifts?
My values?
My story?
My relationships?
My capacity to serve?
My next act of obedience?
The assignment can change while stewardship continues.
How to Tell Whether You Are Grieving an Assignment or Losing Direction
Ask:
What did this assignment allow me to contribute?
Did you teach?
Create order?
Develop people?
Bring joy?
Solve complex problems?
Advocate?
Connect?
Lead?
Where else has that contribution appeared?
Before this role?
Outside of work?
In relationships?
In volunteer spaces?
In completely different industries?
What part of the loss is identity?
Prestige?
Belonging?
Routine?
Income?
External validation?
Be honest.
Those losses are real too.
They just may not be purpose.
What is the next assignment asking of me?
Maybe you do not know yet.
That is okay.
Rejection Does Not Get to Rewrite Purpose
This connects directly to my rejection work.
If a role says no, an assignment was not available in that context.
If a proposal is declined, that expression was not accepted.
If a relationship ends, that connection changed.
The no may contain important data.
But it does not automatically have jurisdiction over your entire purpose.
The offer can be rejected. The assignment can end. The purpose can remain.
That sentence has become one of the clearest bridges between my rejection and purpose work.
If your purpose can only survive inside one title, one company, one relationship, or one opportunity, it is too fragile.
Purpose should travel.
It should be able to find a new expression when the environment changes.
Maybe the next assignment looks smaller.
Maybe stranger.
Maybe less impressive on LinkedIn.
Maybe more aligned.
Maybe you are still finding it.
Do not rush to force a new container just because the old one ended.
Gather the evidence.
Remember what remains true.
Keep living what you can already see.
The door may have closed.
Your purpose was not standing behind it waiting to disappear.
