Are You Living Your Purpose—or Performing a Role That Looks Good on Paper?
There are lives that look aligned from the outside.
Good job.
Good title.
Responsible decisions.
People are proud of you.
Nothing is technically wrong.
And still, somewhere inside, you keep thinking:
That question matters.
Because sometimes we are not failing.
We are performing a role that stopped fitting.
Performance Is Not Always Fake
When I say “performing,” I do not necessarily mean pretending to be somebody you are not.
Sometimes you really are good at the role.
You earned it.
You built the skills.
You can deliver.
You may even enjoy parts of it.
But being capable of something does not automatically mean it is the most aligned expression of your life forever.
If people keep applauding the version of you that is functioning beautifully, it can be difficult to admit that version is tired.
The Role May Be Right and the Way You Are Living It May Be Wrong
Before we dramatically quit everything, please note this. 😂
Misalignment does not always require a new job.
Sometimes the assignment is fine.
The boundaries are not.
The work is meaningful.
The pace is not.
The role aligns with your purpose.
The culture conflicts with your values.
The opportunity is good.
You are carrying six responsibilities that were never yours.
This is why I use the broader C.L.E.A.R. Method®.
Purpose is one part of alignment.
Values matter.
Identity matters.
Courage matters.
Impact matters.
Five Questions for the Role You Are Living
What contribution am I actually here to make in this season?
Does this role give that contribution somewhere to live?
If yes, good.
If not, what feels missing?
What matters to me that my current way of working keeps asking me to violate?
Time?
Integrity?
Creativity?
Freedom?
Family?
Faith?
Growth?
Connection?
Sometimes the discomfort is not the job.
It is the repeated value compromise.
Who have I become in order to succeed here?
And:
Do I recognize that person?
Maybe you became more confident.
Wonderful.
Maybe you became permanently guarded, performative, unavailable, or afraid to be seen learning.
That deserves attention.
What do I already know that I have been avoiding because acting on it would be uncomfortable?
Have the conversation.
Ask for the change.
Stop doing the extra thing.
Apply elsewhere.
Stay and lead differently.
Rest.
Leave.
Courage is not always dramatic.
Sometimes courage is finally acknowledging the sentence you have been editing out of your own thoughts.
What is my current way of living teaching the people around me?
Your team watches how you handle boundaries.
Your children notice what work costs you.
Your friends experience how available you are.
Your leadership creates culture.
Your choices ripple whether you plan them or not.
Success Is Not Alignment
This is one of my strongest opinions.
You can be successful and profoundly out of alignment.
You can hit every metric and hate the life required to hit them.
You can be respected and feel like a stranger to yourself.
You can make more money than you ever expected and realize the tradeoffs are no longer worth it.
You can also be in a hard season that is deeply aligned.
That is why external success cannot answer the whole question.
Stop Asking the Role to Tell You Who You Are
Titles are useful shorthand.
They are terrible identities.
You are allowed to evolve beyond a role without pretending the role was a mistake.
You are allowed to stay in a role and change how you inhabit it.
You are allowed to admit that something impressive no longer fits.
You are allowed to love parts of a life and still need to rearrange it.
Purpose does not require performance.
It requires honesty.
So if everything looks fine and something still feels off, get curious before you get judgmental.
The feeling may not be ingratitude.
It may be information.
And clarity often begins the moment we stop performing the answer we think we are supposed to have. You deserve to be living your purpose.
