Moving forward optimistically is my default as a person who usually thinks about the future. I wouldn’t say I like to linger much in the past, mostly because I feel that there’s nothing you can do differently, and I feel that I did the best or made the best decision that I could make with the resources and information I had available to me. I feel that the past can provide some insights about moving forward and that every experience has some learnings and gifts. However, if I’m sitting in silence (which I do daily), I’m more than often considering the future or working towards being in the present moment. 


Something that tends to come up for me personally or during coaching sessions or conversations is this sometimes subtle but present baby elephant in the room: What’s holding you back?

I remember dating someone older and wiser, with a decade’s head start on life but, surprisingly, still living with all his hair. He appreciated bringing up his plans and dreams that he would love to accomplish “one day.” So, with my natural curiosity and a gentle tone that could land delicately and not attack, I inquired, “Why haven’t you accomplished those things yet?” 


Yes, the relationship is over. LOL! 


But really, though. I feel there’s a lot to think about and unpack here.

Many people, myself included, have lofty dreams, aspirations, ideas, and goals but haven’t taken one step toward making them a reality. Maybe it’s to write and publish a best seller (me), get and remain healthy (me), or become the best cat parent in the world (also me)—yet, we’re stuck on the couch binging Netflix’s “Turning Point: The Bomb and Cold War” documentary (is this just me again?). 


Look, I’m not passing judgment at all. I’m right there with you! Although I may have made a few strides, not all my goals, objectives, or dreams have been realized. I didn’t write many words in my books for most of March. Today, I had at least 15 Starburst Red-flavored jellybeans, and my cat looked at me disappointed when I served his treat 7 minutes too late.

I do notice the common denominator; however, surprise—it’s us. Yes, we’re the ones getting in our own way. I am holding myself back with excuses, fear, lack of discipline, and every other entity. It’s not the universe preventing me from doing something; it’s myself. 


Of course, you know, I have a heaping of hope in this situation because it’s not a total loss, and we can (and will!) effectively and gracefully navigate the obstacle that is ourselves on this journey toward our dreams.

Some steps that we can take collectively right now to kick that traffic cone that has our faces plastered on it to the curb and take some steps to where we want to be: 


  1. Acknowledgment. We’re not where we want to be, and that’s perfectly ok! Uncover and discover how you’re getting in your way, whether through excuses, fear, or taking a nap when you should be doing something else (I prioritize rest and try to take a nap every day, but this may still apply!). 

  2. Dust off the strengths. We all have hidden and not-so-hidden superpowers, especially from past experiences that helped us get to where we are. Figure out how those skills and expertise can help you take steps toward the next big thing.

  4. Gratitude. Sprinkle some gratitude along the way. The truth is, you’ve probably already made some strides that deserve some celebration! And the fact that you even get to work towards these aspirations and dreams is something to be grateful for as well! 

  5. Finally, don’t forget about Your Tribe. Having a supportive friend, mentor, or even a Coach (wink, wink!) can make all the difference as they cheer you on when you’re crushing it or gently nudge when you need it the most.
